Kas was founded in the fourth century BC, and was called Habesa or Habesos in the ancient Lycia language. It served as a harbour to another town called Phellos which was higher up in the mountains. ‘Phellos' is the Greek word for ‘stony place' and the name is apt as there are several structures here in stone, all of which have some historical importance. Later Kaş came to be known as Antiphellos. During the Roman domination, Kaş gained importance as a port town because sponges and wood were exported from its harbour. Taking a Tour of Kaş enables travellers to experience all that this place has to offer and to learn more about its interesting history.
