We are excited about joining whl.travel and a forum of equals that fit the bill perfectly with the emphasis on people who know their own area. We won't change where we've been and we won't change where we are going. We have been practicing sustainable tourism for longer than the term has existed because, quite simply, it's the only thing we know!
"Our activities are all low impact, we don't have quad-bikes, jet skis or 4wd jeeps- instead you get a paddle, a rope, a sail, a wet suit, a pair of boots or a wing..."
By attracting clients to this type of activity we are cutting down on the pollution that traditional tourism brings. We also buy local produce and employ local people. We're looking forward to getting our varied and specialised activities out to a bigger audience without having to go through a wholesaler who couldn't understand the specifics of our sector.
We are also active in our community. Our most recent commendation was from local government for pioneering the "Friendship Race" between the Greek Island of Castellorizo (or
Megisti) and Kaş on the Turkish Mainland. We also have a long history of taking disabled children diving and run adventure camps for orphans.
Currently, we are working with the Forestry Commission to build mountain refuges or starting experiential tours such as living with nomads. All these are pro bono -- we give all our time and resources free of charge.
Don't think twice about asking us for any insider tips or recommendations as you are planning your travels. We are your local connection!
Meet the Team of Bougainville Travel!
Meet Phil Buckley, originally hailing from Manchester, England. A student of Art History and European literature, he travelled during his gap year of employment. He started doing coach tours and representative jobs in continental Europe but decided to try something alternative whilst on a break from a Ph.D. in Philosophy and Art. An adventure company offered him trekking in Turkey and he never went back! When not travelling, Phil is interested in photography, technology, music and football.
A little company history...
Our company was opened by two trekking guides and their favourite bar owner! We started 15 years ago and have become Turkey's largest adventure specialist. We knew that the Lycian Coast was not only a great walking destination but had the potential for a whole range of adventure and activities and was our idea to start sea-kayaking and canyoning. We also opened one of the first diving schools. Now we also offer paragliding and MTB. We also run two hotels ourselves and offer transfers and tailor-made itineraries for the whole of Turkey.
What we do...
We are the perfect location for low impact adventure travel, with mountains of 3,000 m (snow capped until the end of June) just inland and one of the least spoilt stretches of the Mediterranean in front of us. Situated roughly halfway between Olympos and Öüldeniz on Turkey's Turquoise Coast, we are the best diving location in the Med, the best and first destination for sea-kayaking, a lot of which we do over the ruins of a sunken city in a lagoon-like location.
The valleys running off the mountains mean we have ideal conditions for canyoning and MTB. Plus the steep hills behind our little port town means we can offer paragliding. Kaş is also at the heart of the Lycian Way, Turkey's acclaimed first long way trekking route. At a guess I would say 5,000 people a year, Turkish and foreign, try at least one of our activities.
As you plan your trip to Kaş, feel free to ask us for any advice. We personally know all of our hotels and guides that we are working with, and also can recommend any secret hidden tips about the best places to eat, shop and see! We are your local connection!
