How to travel to Kaş

New Air Routes and Carriers from the United Kingdom

Jet2.com have announced that they will be flying from EMA to Dalaman.

Pegasus Airlines is now flying from Birmingham and Manchester to Dalaman and Antalya.

Thomas Cook have a new location flying from Exeter to Dalaman.

Kas Today

Today Kaş has a small harbour which has daily boats as well as fishing boats for rent. The town only has small pebbled beaches and this is the reason why it never became very popular with tourists. But this has actually proven to be a blessing, saving the town from becoming overdeveloped. The activity in the town centres around the town square which has many restaurants, tea houses, shops and mosques. Night life here is quite moderate. The traditional Friday market is an interesting place to visit.

As such there is no proper beach in the town. To reach the closest beach you have to take a small ferry from the centre of the harbour to reach Nuri's beach club. You can also go to Don Quixote, Onur, Bilal, or Liman azazi in the same way. A return trip by the ferry will cost you 10 Ytl. Boats have no fixed timings and leave when you want.

Kaputaş beach is another small but pretty beach at a distance of 10 km from Kas. This is a sandy beach and is a must see. If you are lucky, you will get to swim along with sea turtles. The water is clear and has a marvellous turquoise hue. The Patara Beach is also not to be missed. It has 18 km of white sand beach. You can get here in half an hour by taking a minibus from Kaş. This beach is well connected and has nearly 10 buses running to Patara every hour. The Greek island of Meis is right opposite the town of Kaş.

Kaş also gives you an opportunity to swim with the dolphins. You can do this by going to the Dolphin Therapy Centre at Kaş. The whole experience is dream like and will cost you 110YTI (70 Euros for 10 minutes).

Recreational Activities

Kaş offers a variety of water sports such as canoeing, diving, paragliding, jet skiing and also cave diving to explore dark caves under water. There are also daily excursions on boats which take you to the nearby bays and islands.

Scuba diving
is a very popular water sport in Kaş. For more than 20 years, divers from the world over have been coming here and enjoying the diving sites. Kaş offers more than 25 diving sites in the Mediterranean Sea. You can choose diving sites according to your taste from shipwrecks to caves, drop offs, underwater canyons, unusual underwater landscapes and ancient amphorae. There is also a variety of marine life here because of the clear and warm waters (visibility here is up to 40 metres / 130 feet and water temperatures measure a comfortable 28 degrees). As there are not many industries and industrial fishing is also absent, the marine life thrives well in these waters. The small islands are environmentally protected and the high levels of nutrients in these waters also contribute to the well-being of marine life.

Kaş also is an excellent site for paragliding, which can be done anytime between the months of April and October. Do try the tandem paragliding flight, which can be so special that you are bound not to forget it for sometime. The launch area for this sport is near the summit of Asaz Mountain which is at height of 100 m or 3500 ft. This flight takes you over mountain ridges, over the sea to view the Greek Island Meis and finally lands in the yacht harbour of Kaş.

Around Kas

There is plenty of sight seeing which can be done around Kaş. Historical sites, in particular, are in abundance. Kaş is also a good place to undertake trekking as the town is surrounded by mountains. You can visit the remains of ancient and remote villages on your trek. The scenery from the mountains too is stunning. The mountains you can go trekking on are Mount Kizlar Sivrisi which measures about 3086 m and Mount Akdag at 3030 m.

A trip to the sunken city of Kekova and the ruins of Simena is a popular day trip. This sunken city is the result of an earthquake which submerged this 5th century Lycian port under water. A boat takes you right up to the ruins. There are some areas where you can swim and get extremely close to the ruins. You can even swim in a cave at one point. However, you must be cautious not to touch anything. Even without swimming close to the ruins, you can still see everything clearly as the waters are crystal clear.

Overlooking the lagoon is the shore village of Simena. Here the tour operators allow you to climb the rocky pathways leading to the ruins located on top of the hill.  En route you pass through a pretty village and next you can see the Lycian rock tombs. When you reach the old fort you get a splendid view of the water.

Another amazing place to visit near Kaş is Saklikent, which literally means ‘hidden city'. This is located 60 km from Kas and can be reached by minibuses which run hourly to Saklikent. This is also a great place for canoeing and rafting. Later you can also walk through the canyon and try your hand at rock climbing.

Turkish Cuisine in Kaş

Kaş has a rich variety of Turkish cuisine which is influenced by Arabic, Caucasian and Mediterranean cuisines. The most commonly used vegetables are eggplant (aubergine), tomato, beans, cucumber, onion, garlic and various lentils. Beef is the most commonly used meat. Lamb is also commonly found but pork is hard to find although its use in cooking is not illegal. A lot of spices are also used in Turkish cooking. The staple food is rice (pilav), bread and bulgur wheat. Food is cooked in vegetable oil and sometimes in butter.

Eating out in Kaş is fabulous and fun!

A typical full Turkish meal at a Kebab restaurant begins with a soup. It is usually a lentil soup called mercimek cobrasi, followed by meze, which is basically one or several appetisers made of cheese, olives, pickles, and other small dishes. Meze can be a full meal by itself, especially if it is taken with raki (distilled grape spirits). The main course is meat. Turkey's best culinary export to the world is the kebab, which is grilled meat served in various forms. This includes the döner kebap, (rotating kebab) which is meat shaved from a giant rotating spit. The shish kebab is also extremely popular and is basically skewered meat. The köfte or meat ball is also an interesting culinary invention.

You might want to try a pide or pizza house, which is frequently just the place for a reasonably priced lunch in a bustling atmosphere. Pide, also known as Turkish pizza, is a staple Turkish food. Pide along with a beer for two will cost you about 15 Euros.

Tea in Turkey

An interesting place worth visiting is the municipal tea garden, close to the harbour and behind the row of cafes in the town square (meydan). This is a nice shady place to relax and sip a glass of çay (pronounced "chi" or tea in English) and watch the world go by. While the locals prefer the dark tea of the Black Sea region, apple tea (elma çay) is also available, which is made mainly for the tourists. Turkish tea is strong tasting and highly flavoured, which is why it is served only in small quantities in tulip shaped glasses. It is served with cubed sugar. If you want milk or lemon you have to ask for it. If you find it too strong then you may need to add water or ask for "açik çay" (achik or weak tea) to lower the strength to your liking.

Traditionally, Turkish tea is brewed in a samovar, which is a small pot containing very strong tea, and is kept on top of a larger vessel containing boiling water. You can pour a little in small tulip glasses and then dilute it with boiling water. However, Turkish tea is also available in tea bags now. Natural apple (elma) çay can be purchased in several herb houses in Kaş. There are a great number of coffee and tea houses in all cities of Turkey, where you can sit and relax with your favourite cup of beverage and enjoy the ambiance.

Historic Kas

Kaş is situated at the neck of a small peninsula in the Mediterranean. The town stands on what was the ancient city of Antiphellos, and its ruins are found all over the present town. Kas's perfect location makes it one of the most beautiful spots in the south west Anatolian coast. Despite the fact that the town has an open location vulnerable to attack, it still does not have walls around the city. The only fortifications are some rectangular walls which run along the shore. These are remains of the Hellenistic period. Behind the harbour, you can also find remains of a temple which dates to the 1st century BC. The temple is en route to the Cukurbag peninsula and is constructed using ashlar masonry (stone masonry using dressed stone).

A Kaş Highlight , which is not to be missed, is the 4th century BC. Lycian tomb on Uzun Çarsı Caddesi (street). This monument has become the symbol of Kaş and has the typical architectural characteristics of the region. It is a single-door hyposorium, carved from solid rock and has a thick base to support it. Above this is the sarcophagus, which is carved out from a separate piece of stone. The lid of the sarcophagus has two long sides which have two lion's resting their heads on their paws. This not only embellishes the structure but also facilitates in lifting the head and putting it on top of the sarcophagus. The western face of the sarcophagus is narrow and is divided into four panels. On it are male and female figures connected with funerary observances. This sarcophagus is located at the upper end of  Uzun Çarsi, which also has traditional Turkish houses, souvenir shops and shops selling souvenirs.

If you proceed directly west from the temple, you reach a lovely theatre made in the Hellenistic style. It dates back to 1st century BC and seats about 3000 people. The Hellenistic cavea, or the semi circular seating area, has no diazoma dividing it. It mainly consists of 26 tiers of wooden stage which is largely intact, with only the outer walls giving away. An exit and entrance are present on two sides of the theatre. The theatre was constructed using local limestone. Today, although the tribunes and outer walls can be seen, sadly there is no sign of the skene (stage building). It is a great experience to climb up this ancient monument nestled in an olive grove and catch a panoramic view of Kaş, Meis and the Mediterranean region.

In the north east region of Kaş, there are rock cut tombs which date back to the 4th century BC. There is another rock tomb resembling a Doric structure with Doric triglyphs located between the open sea and the hill. This was probably the acropolis in the ancient city. The funerary chamber of this tomb can be entered by a high door and houses three benches. These benches are decorated with oyster shell and rosette motifs. The bench, which is located directly opposite the door, was used for funeral rites and is embellished with a frieze which has 25 female figures dancing hand in hand. The acropolis appears to have been surrounded by a fortified wall, as traces of this can be seen on the façade which faces the island of Meis (also known as Kastellorizon). These are missing on the northern and western slopes. A variety of tombs can be seen on town's northern slopes.

When to Visit

The summer months are hot and dry in Kaş, which is quite typical of the Mediterranean region. Temperatures can reach 35 degrees Celsius during the day. Winters are warm during the day and can reach 22 degrees but night temperatures can drop below 10 degrees. July and August are great for diving, swimming and snorkeling but can be very hot at lower altitudes for strenuous activities. For these activities, the best time to visit Kaş is early spring from February until almost the end of June and from the first of September until the end of November.

You are encouraged to visit Kaş during the winter. Kaş is quiet then and prices are at their lowest. During December and January it usually rains a lot and thunderstorms can be quite fierce. Daytime temperatures are mild and great for trekking or other adventure activities but do prepare for several rainy days.

Kaş was a sleepy fishing village as recently as the early 1980s. Today it has become a popular holiday destination. The town's official population of eight thousand gets greatly outnumbered during the summer by holiday makers.

Kaş is also less snobbish and more youth friendly and cosmopolitan than the neighbouring city of Kalkan. Turkish backpackers and casual travelers from Ankara and Istanbul now frequently come here to visit. Kaş has also firmly established its reputation on the map of the backpacker's trail. However, what will draw you most to Kaş is its innate charm and the amiability of the Kaş native, making your vacation a truly memorable one.
